It is priced as a range rather than a single figure, because the work varies house to house. What moves it, in rough order of size:

• The cooling capacity your home actually needs, established by a load calculation rather than by matching the old unit
• The condition of your ductwork
• Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed equipment
• Any electrical work the new system requires

This is why two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands. Ask each contractor to state the equipment model, the result of the load calculation, what ductwork is included and whether the permit is in the price — once quotes say those things, they become comparable.

What AC brands should you stay away from?

Brand matters less than most homeowners expect. Across the mainstream manufacturers, how well a system is sized, ducted and commissioned predicts your experience far more reliably than the badge on the equipment.

Where brand does matter is local support. What counts in year six is whether a Sacramento supply house stocks the part and whether local technicians know the platform. Can I legally install my own AC unit?

Central air conditioning work in California generally requires a permit and inspection, and handling refrigerant requires federal certification. Manufacturers also typically condition the parts warranty on installation by a licensed contractor, so a self-installed system may carry no warranty at all.

Requirements change and vary by jurisdiction. The Contractors State License Board and your local building department are the right places to confirm what applies to your project.

What replacement day looks like

A straightforward change-out is one day, typically four to eight hours on site. Ductwork, electrical work or a heat pump conversion can extend it to two.

Floors are covered and the old refrigerant is recovered properly. The new coil and condenser go in, the line set and electrical are connected, and the condensate drain is routed and checked. Then the system is pulled into vacuum to remove moisture, charged to the manufacturer’s specification, and commissioned — airflow measured, temperature split checked and the thermostat configured.

Commissioning is what determines how the system performs over its life, and it is where we spend the time.

What we install

Daikin systems across the range, from single-stage through variable-speed. Where a home has no ductwork, or a room the existing system never reached, we install ductless mini splits.

We replace complete systems — heating and cooling together. Replacing both at once is the only point at which the whole system can be designed as a matched set rather than inherited piece by piece.

Rebates in your area

Which incentives apply depends on your address. SMUD serves Fair Oaks, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Carmichael and Rancho Cordova, and much of Folsom. Roseville has its own municipal utility, Roseville Electric. Rocklin, Granite Bay and El Dorado Hills are served by PG&E. TECH Clean California adds a statewide heat pump incentive on top, and Cobex Air is a participating TECH Clean California contractor.
